Large quantities of locally produced vegetables were supplied to Mahaseel for marketing purposes in the first week (from June 5-10) of the launch of its initiative to market local products.
These included products such as tomatoes, pepper, cucumber, zucchini, eggplants and others, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) said in a statement yesterday.
The company kept these items at a collection centre set up to store the products supplied by local farms at Doha Central Market. It will also co-ordinate with the MME and open more centres to receive such goods from local farmers.
The products of Mahaseel, a subsidiary of Hassad Food, are available in the local market now.
Mahaseel was created based on a directive from HE the Prime Minister as part of the country’s food security initiatives and to encourage increasing the local agricultural production pursuant to a study of the actual needs of the market. Accordingly, a mechanism was adopted to offer the necessary support to the private agricultural sector in order to help achieve self-sufficiency in food production.
Since the registration process started in March, 124 local farms have registered at Mahaseel to market their products through the company. A compact operational system was put in place to ensure that local products are received from farmers at the collection centre and then sorted, packaged and marketed with the aim of delivering high-quality products to consumers.
The MME, represented by the Agricultural Affairs Department, exerts continuous efforts to support and encourage the owners of local farms registered in the State, in order to increase the local production of vegetables in line the ministry’s policy of achieving self-sufficiency.
