A five-day Eid al-Fitr festival, organised by the celebrations committee of the Private Engineering Office, has started at Souq Waqif and Souq Al Wakrah.

Nationals, expats and their families are flocking to the two antique markets as they offer a variety of entertainment programmes at special rates and in ideal conditions.

Souq Waqif manager Mohamed al-Salem said such events are organised every year to bring happiness and joy to everyone, especially as the venue is one of the most popular destinations in Qatar.

He said the celebrations of Eid al Fitr, which started on Wednesday, are held inside a large air-conditioned tent in Al Ahmad square. The events include games, programmes and a variety of plays for children.

Al Salem said the events are held inside the tent due to the weather conditions.

He said as part of the festival there are activities and workshops for children organised by Souq Waqif Centre for Arts throughout the Eid.

Souq Al Wakrah too witnessed a huge turnout of families since the early hours of the celebrations in the air-conditioned tent allocated by the management.

Souq manager Khalid Saif al-Suwaidi told QNA that the venue witnessed a large number of visitors on the first day of Eid celebrations.

He added that the festival is being held in a large tent, which contains more than 40 individual skills and games on the waterfront, in addition to several artistic performances, acrobatics shows and more, every day from 4pm to 10pm.

He added that the fireworks display attracted thousands of visitors on the first day.

Al-Suwaidi said the festival at Souq Al Wakrah has become very popular because of the beautiful scenes it creates on the waterfront.

He said that Souq Al Wakra is ready to receive visitors in large numbers and provide them with all facilities including electric cars for smooth navigation, restaurants and cafes.

Souq Waqif and Souq Al Wakrah are characterised by their traditional architectural design, which preserves the peculiarities of traditional Qatari culture, whether in shops, on streets, pavements and walls.
