The Qualification of Small-Scale Contractors Initiative by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is turning out to be an encouragement for local companies in Qatar. The project has so far helped 107 Qatari manufacturers and 152 contractors become part of various works carried out by Ashghal.
Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of Project Qatar 2019 at Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC) Ashghal's Project Affairs director Youssef al-Emadi said the local companies only need to meet certain requirements in terms of quality.
“The initiative has helped them become part of building construction, grading works, road pavement, drainage facility, construction of pedestrian lanes and works to enhance traffic safety," he explained.
The initiative was launched in January, 2018, in a bid to help Qatari companies get an ideal environment for growth. It is also aimed at providing Qatari investors with opportunities in construction sector by giving them chances to implement small projects and helping them to be a part of the country’s strategic projects and contribute to the local economy.
Ashghal recently opened four tenders for road improvement projects. The value of the projects stands at about QR100mn. The authorities are now looking to increase the participation of local companies.
“Contracts of few upcoming development projects including welfare project for senior citizens will be signed with local companies. More participation of local companies will be ensured,” al-Emadi said.
Ashghal has also plans to launch few projects that will be implemented through PPP as part of its efforts to contribute to the involvement of the private sector and increase its investments in the implementation of public sector projects.
The new initiative will help Ashghal to benefit from the experience of the private sector in project management and implementation fields. Besides, it will lead into transfer of experiences between public and private sectors.
Meanwhile, the stall by Ashghal at Project Qatar 2019 is drawing crowds. The stall highlights the contributions by Ashghal for the comprehensive development of Qatar in various sectors. Models of prestigious projects including Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor, Al Khor Coastal Road, National Health Laboratory and health projects are on display.
