Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently hosted its fifth Annual Symposium for Community Mental Health Services in Qatar with the participation of hundreds of specialists in mental health, as well as the most prominent partners in the health sector.
HMC Mental Health unit chief executive officer Iain Tulley said that the conference focused this year on mental health, which was first announced during the Qatar National Mental Health Strategy 2013-2018.
He added that the focus on mental health and human well-being is very important.
It contributes to protecting the rights of individuals who need mental healthcare. The implementation of the Mental Health Law in Qatar is an important step forward, which in turn guarantees the rights of citizens and residents when needed for treatment.
He pointed to the progress made in the development of the practice of mental healthcare in order to guide medical staff to deal with it and to ensure that patients and families are informed of the available treatment options.
He spoke of a special mental health law office at the Ministry of Public Health, which will be run by mental health experts with an empowered authority to oversee the continued implementation of the law.
Within the framework of implementing the Qatar National Health Strategy 2018-2022, the Ministry of Public Health is developing a plan to promote mental health and well-being and to develop the system of access to mental health services by reaching the target of 40% of mental health services in primary and community health centres by 2022.

Mohamed Ali Siddig said that a clear effort has been made by working closely with primary health care partners to provide more assessment and consultation services in primary healthcare centres, often dedicated to treating people classified as mild to moderate.
He explained that the model was applied at the mental health clinic at Al-Thamama Health Center, which provides assistance to patients without fear of shame and the fear of being stigmatized, as well as establishing a mental health clinic at the primary health care center at Qatar University.
Teams have been established focusing on community mental health services in Al Wakrah area and the area south of Doha city.
Al Wakra Hospital also provides outpatient services, community communication and consultations for patients in the hospital and emergency department, he added.
