For the second successive day, Salmeen Sultan al-Suwaidi stole the show at the 12th and last leg of the Hathab Equestrian Tour. After having won the Big Tour class on the opening day, the Qatari rider repeated the feat yesterday, guiding the veteran 19-year-old grey gelding Cantaro 32 to a convincing win at the Al Shaqab arena.
After six months of gruelling competition, the overall winners in various categories will be declared today, with riders having collected points from the last rounds. And Salmeen increased his chances of overall Big Tour title with back-to-back wins. Salmeen and Cantaro 32 cantered to victory in 72.01 seconds, with the rider picking up QR4,200 in prize money. Nasser al-Ghazali was second astride Aslan 69, followed by Faleh Suwead al-Ajami on Carport in third.
In the Medium Tour, the pair of Mohamed Saeed Haidan and 14-year-old mare Apple Bee secured their second successive victory. The duo finished the round fastest in 58.98 secs, well ahead of runner-up Saeed Nasser al-Qadi astride Daydreamer EC, who came home in 62.45 secs. Mohamed Sultan al-Suwaidi took third spot with Numero Uno T in 64.21 secs.
Meanwhile, Ghanim Nasser al-Qadi won the Small Tour class with 12-year-old gelding Henrico. The duo was in top form as they cleared the hurdles in 52.94 secs. Ghanim also took the third spot with Fudine. Khalifa Abdulla al-Khaldi and Dusty finished second.
The QR1mn equestrian series, which was launched last year, has received overwhelming response and the competition has gained immense popularity. Today the competitions will be held in both showjumping and dressage, after which the overall winners will be crowned.
Hathab, meaning ‘Canter’ in Arabic, is an initiative launched by Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani. The series is open for Qatari nationals and also to residents of Qatar. The event is being conducted jointly by Qatar Equestrian Federation (QEF) and Al Shaqab.
