The annual Katara Oud Festival continued for the third day at Katara — the Cultural Village with a host of captivating performances by artistes from different countries as well as informative exhibits.
The evening concert at the Katara Opera House yesterday featured the likes of Tariq al-Jundi from Jordan, Charbel Rouhani from Lebanon, Aref Juman from Yemen, Oya Levendoglu from Turkey, the Lingua Franca Ensemble from Greece and singer/oud player Dree al-Hajri from Kuwait.
Also part of the day’s programme was an informative lecture by Turkish professor Dr Ahmed al-Turaby in Building 19. The lecture covered the writings of the Muslim thinker and scholar, Yacoub bin Ishaq al-Kindi, and also shed light on his life and legacy.
The ongoing third edition of the festival is being held under the theme ‘Alkindi’, inspired by the thinker and scholar.
The festival features performances by more than 25 prominent oud players as well as an exhibition highlighting the works of oud makers.
The participants come from various countries, such as Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon, Yemen, Kuwait, Greece and Syria.
As part of the festival, an exhibition featuring prominent oud makers from Turkey, Iraq, Greece, Kuwait and Syria is being held in Building 19, showcasing their original works that reflect the authentic beauty of the instrument.
The exhibition also sheds light on the ancient practice of oud manufacturing in the region.
Events held yesterday as part of the exhibition witnessed the participation of a number of oud players and musicians from across the region.
An outdoor musical performance by prominent oud players also featured the enchanting voice of Mohamed Barakat from Syria.
The show was held on the ‘Alkindi’ stage in front of Building 19.
The four-day Katara Oud Festival concludes today. The concert begins at 8pm.
