Hamad International Airport (HIA) has partnered with Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation’s (Kahramaa) National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency “Tarsheed” to mark Earth Day on April 22.
Launched by Abdulaziz al-Mass, HIA vice president of Commercial and Marketing; and engineer Abdulaziz al-Hammadi, Kahramaa Conservation and Energy Efficiency Department manager, the two-week awareness campaign includes a booth placed at the airport to highlight Qatar’s contribution to combating climate change through Tarsheed and HIA’s efforts to decrease its carbon foot-print and, improve energy efficiency and conservation in Qatar.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Tarsheed to celebrate Earth Day. At HIA, we believe in our environmental responsibility and are committed to tackling climate change within the context of our strategy. We are committed to supporting Tarsheed’s initiatives and hope the booth will create awareness to passengers traveling through HIA,” al-Mass said in a press statement.
This new initiative follows in the tracks of the existing Memorandum of Understanding between HIA, Qatar Airways and Tarsheed, which was implemented last year to achieve long-term sustainability and energy conservation in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Through this framework, Tarsheed conducted staff trainings for both HIA and Qatar Airways on best practices for electricity and water conservation as well as energy efficiency, in addition to planned energy audits at HIA’s award-winning passenger terminal and at Qatar Airways head offices.
“Both Tarsheed and HIA support the Earth Day Global Celebration, which is touching people worldwide due to global climate change. Our partnership with HIA has given us the best platform for our booth to help raise awareness to global and local passengers traveling through the terminal,” Al-Hammadi said.
“HIA is one of the most sustainable airports in the world and is joining hands with Tarsheed the Primary Government Programme in sustainability in Qatar,” he noted.
“Through Tarsheed, Kahramaa disseminates the awareness, regulations and technologies related to energy efficiency and renewable energy. Therefore, we cooperate with all institutions and sectors in the country to achieve this goal,” al-Hammadi added.
HIA successfully retained its Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 3 in 2018. The airport’s renewal came after successfully reaching Level 3 ‘Optimisation’ status in the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.
The airport is the first airport among the Gulf countries and only the second in the Mena region to achieve this accreditation.
HIA is currently targeting to improve carbon efficiency per passenger by 30% by 2030 against a 2015 baseline and has achieved significant progress.
In addition to a fuel-saving programme aimed at reducing fuel consumption through operational practice and driver awareness, the airport’s Carbon Management Plan encourages the participation of the airport’s stakeholders, including passengers, Qatar Airways and its subsidiaries, government stakeholders, private operators, and retailers to engage in environmentally-conscious practices and reduce carbon emissions across the airport campus.
A cross-functional Energy Working Group identifies and promotes energy saving initiatives, including the optimisation of air-conditioning for passenger load bridges through integration with flight schedules, replacing conventional lighting with LEDs, and optimising light usage at the airport’s boarding gates.
The airport is also committed to continually improving environmental performance by achieving lower and more efficient greenhouse gas emissions, reducing and recycling waste, and managing noise and controlling emissions to air and water.
HIA’s key environmental achievements are presented in its Sustainability Report, which covers the airport’s contribution towards group-wide environmental objectives. The report can be accessed online through the HIA’s official website.
Tarsheed was launched as part of the Qatar National Vision 2030 in 2012 by Kahramaa under the auspices of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani under the slogan “Qatar is Pulsing”.
Qatar marked a savings of QR1,470mn and QR283mn by reducing electricity consumption by 6295gwh and water consumption by 33.22mm3, respectively.
In 2018, natural gas consumption was reduced by 60642mcf due to intervention technology and awareness by Tarsheed. The year also witnessed reduction of 3.66mn tonnes of carbon emission.
