The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has laid the foundation stone during an official ceremony for a cancer treatment centre project under the patronage of Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kabore.

The ceremony was also attended by the Burkina Faso prime minister, a high-level delegation from QFFD, headed by Deputy Director General of the Department of Shared Services, Mansour Abdullah al-Dhaimi, and a number of ministers and officials from the Burkinabe side.

Burkina Faso Health Minister Leonie Claudine expressed her thanks and gratitude to the government and people of Qatar under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, for the humanitarian and development assistance provided to Burkina Faso in the healthcare sector, commending the positive impact that will be yielded from this project.

Meanwhile, al-Dhaimi said, "We at the QFFD are proud to build this new of a kind medical centre in West Africa that will strengthen the healthcare sector in Burkina Faso and be a major cause of life for many cancer patients. This project is of great importance to us and local officials and will be active in providing treatment, and improving the level of health services in general and cancer patients in particular"

The project aims to increase the ability to secure access to treatment, and improve the quality of services and reduce the number of treatments abroad, which will in turn help reduce the financial burden on the government's health sector budget. This project is estimated to benefit 1,700 people annually.

In addition to training of medical and technical staff, the centre also includes a radiotherapy section, chemical treatment rooms, laboratories and administrative offices.
