Australian racehorse Winx retired on Saturday after
winning her final race in Sydney, a record 33rd in a row.
Winx won her third-consecutive Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2000
metres, beating Kluger and Hartnell in the 4-million-dollar (2.8
million US dollars) race in front of some 40,000 people at Sydney's
sold-out Randwick Racecourse.
The 7-year-old mare, which also holds a world record for winning 25
Group One races, retires on Saturday as one of the greatest-ever race
horses.
"It's over, isn't it?" Winx's jockey, Hugh Bowman, said after the
race. "It has been very surreal for me all day with the amount of
people here, it is just amazing."
"Everyone watching around the world... This horse has captured the
hearts of a lot of people around the globe. There is really nothing
more for me to say."
Until the 1500-metre mark, Winx was in sixth place in the nine-horse
field and made the last run within the next 400 metres.
Winx has also won the Cox Plate, Australia's weight-for-age
championship, a record four times.
In total, Winx won 37 races from 43 starts during her career and
earned a record 26.3 million dollars.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Winx epitomised
the popular Australian slogan - "a fair go."
"[The horse and its owners] to me epitomise that 'fair go for those
who have a go' and I think that's the story of Winx," Morrison told
reporters on Sunday.
