An Israeli airstrike on a military base in Syria's
Hama province early Saturday injured three people, Syrian state media
State news agency SANA, citing a military source, said the dawn attack was carried out by Israeli jets using Lebanese airspace, adding that air defences managed to down some Israeli rockets before they reached their intended targets in the city of Masyaf.
The attack wounded three fighters and caused material damage, SANA added. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, meanwhile said that at least 17 fighters from government forces and their allies were wounded in the attack on an area in the western countryside of Hama.
It added that the targets included a site for developing medium range rockets. Activists in the area said members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and their allies, who have been fighting alongside the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since 2011, were posted at the base. Israel had previously said it will not tolerate Iran seeking to establish permanent military bases in Syria.
A source close to the Syrian government told dpa that the target that was hit was a military school and a military training camp in Hama. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump declared Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a foreign terrorist organization, marking the first time the US has used the designation against a part of another government. Israel usually does not comment on the strikes it is alleged to have carried out in Syria. Syrian and Iranian military facilities in the wartorn country have been hit several times by similar strikes in the past few months.
