A specialised workshop on combating fraud and counterfeiting in banking kicked off in Doha on Monday to highlight the recent trends in the techniques of countering fraudulent and unethical operations inside institutions.

The three-day workshop is organised by the Union of Arab Banks under the auspices of Qatar Central Bank.

Participants will learn about internal control strategies, the fraud risk management, resources for early detection and prevention of fraudulent operations, knowledge of fraud mitigation tools by identifying the latest monitoring policies and systems, and ensuring the best way to conduct an internal investigation in accordance with the standards of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE).

The workshop will also offer a combination of theory, practical situations, statistics, graphs and exercises, to provide the participants with in-depth knowledge about the skills necessary to identify, detect and deter various types of fraud, as well as evaluate and report on fraud indicators in banks and financial institutions.

The participants will share knowledge and experience on fraud, counterfeiting and fraud detection mechanisms. At the end of the workshop, they will learn about the main areas of fraudulent business and will be provided with the necessary ideas to assess the risks of fraud in their banking activities and address them through appropriate controls with a dynamic criminal approach.

The workshop is aimed at audit and audit management personnel, internal oversight officers, fraud investigation unit staff and finance management staff.

Commenting on the workshop, Talal Sabah al-Abdullah from Qatar Central Bank said that the workshop aims at combating fraud and counterfeiting in the financial sector, stressing the need to raise the awareness of employees of the sectors as well as the public on fraudulent and counterfeiting operations in banking, in light of the current expand and growth in the financial field and all other economic sectors in Qatar.

He underlined that Qatar Central Bank is constantly working to raise awareness and training the staff working in the financial sector in various fields, so that the level of awareness and training would be appropriate to combat all types of fraud and counterfeiting.

He stressed the keenness of Qatar Central Bank on keeping pace with the best international practices issued by international organisations and financial authorities, noting a continuous co-operation to attract the best and latest technology to feed the financial sector and ensure proper protection against fraud and counterfeiting.
