Qatar Football Association (QFA) Vice President, Saoud al-Mohannadi, has been elected as a member of the powerful FIFA Council for the session 2019-2023, on the sidelines of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur.

Al-Mohannadi received 37 of the 46 votes.

In addition to al-Mohannadi, Du Zhaocai of China, Praful Patel of India, Kohzo Tashimaof Japan and Mariano Araneta of the Philippines were also elected to the FIFA Council.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was present at the 29th general meeting of AFC.

The AFC Congress also approved Qatar's proposal to amend a provision in the statute that prevented candidacy for two posts, and thus al-Mohannadi also retained, by acclamation, his position as AFC Vice President for West Asia.

Moreover, the AFC General Assembly re-elected Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa as its President for a new term of four years.

Sheikh Salman has been elected by acclamation for the position he has held since 2013, after the withdrawal of his rivals to the post.
