Qatari entrepreneurs and local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) stand to gain from the procurement opportunities being offered by Katara Hospitality during the fourth edition of the Government Procurement and Contracting Conference & Exhibition ‘Moushtarayat 2019’.
“Moushtarayat is a big opportunity for Katara and for our suppliers to know what our requirements are, and Katara is offering them participation in the food and beverage (F&B) tender, which offers two opportunities – a six-month contract and a one-year contract.
“The companies vying for the one-year contract are usually local suppliers because they are the ones offering services for our restaurants and hotels, so this is a chance for them to be a part of Katara Hospitality,” said Nadia Traktar, Katara Hospitality senior officer, procurement.
Compared to last year’s Moushtarayat event, Traktar said Katara Hospitality has witnessed a growth in the number of participating suppliers, offering not only projects for the F&B sector but also opportunities in the design, furniture, IT, and lighting fields.
“Katara Hospitality is offering more opportunities in this year’s Moushtarayat. During the event, we will be holding a series of one-on-one meetings with new and existing suppliers, which will also be an opportunity for them to showcase some of the products that they are offering us this year,” Traktar told Gulf Times.
Traktar said Katara Hospitality regularly works with local suppliers and 50% of the tenders are awarded to them. She also noted that many local suppliers are meeting the needs and standards of Katara.
Asked if Katara Hospitality is optimistic in awarding more contracts to local suppliers this year, Traktar referred to the success of its ‘Go Local, Buy Local, Eat Local’ initiative, which was aimed at promoting homegrown products on the occasion of Qatar National Day.
“We launched this initiative along with The Ritz-Carlton Doha, Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, and Sharq Village & Spa to encourage the entrepreneurs and local suppliers to work with our hotel. We worked with local tailors, the youth, and other suppliers, and it was very successful,” she stressed.
Traktar also underscored Katara Hospitality’s role in developing and supporting SMEs and entrepreneurs in Qatar. She said last year 40% of Katara Hospitality’s revenues and purchases benefited local suppliers that are 100% Qatari companies.
In a related development, Traktar said Katara Hospitality’s goal is to reach 60 hotels by 2026. Since its establishment in 1970, Katara Hospitality has a total of 7,912 keys and 40 properties, 31 of which are operational, while nine are under development.
As one of the leading hospitality organisations in the world, Katara Hospitality has created an iconic collection of hotels spread across 12 countries in four continents, Traktar said.
