Qatar Petroleum (QP) has honoured more than 280 executive, senior and mid-level leaders for completing its first signature leadership programme.
The event, held under the patronage of HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also QP president and CEO, was the highlight of an unprecedented QP investment in its current leaders, which included initiating programmes targeting the executive, senior, mid-level and frontline leaders respectively.
The leadership programmes were cascaded, starting with the executive team and finishing with frontline leaders. A further 460 frontline leaders will complete their programme at the end of 2019.
HE al-Kaabi highlighted the importance of leadership in achieving QP’s vision of becoming one of the best national oil and gas companies in the world.
“When the decision was taken to reorganise Qatar Petroleum, our first attention was to transforming people before anything else," he said.
"We had some of the best talents in the business, and we wanted them to be even better. We worked to transform our culture and drive our performance levels higher. Most importantly, we invested in our leaders.
“Leadership is the single-most important element of success for any organisation. It is not just about making the right decisions, but also about communicating with your teams and inspiring them to help drive greater results. For us in Qatar Petroleum, we have made a strategically important investment in our leaders to ensure that people development remains a core business that drives our growth strategy.”
HE al-Kaabi also thanked all QP leaders for their commitment during the one-year programme. He also thanked Insead, Cranfield, and Mercuri Urval, which have collaborated with QP to design and implement the signature programme.
Executive vice-president of Human Capital Abdulaziz al-Mannai said: “We recognise that our ambitious international growth strategy places greater demands on QP leaders and employees. This is why our leaders must collaborate and work in new ways to reach new goals, and to drive our strategic priorities, champion change, inspire and develop the next generations of leaders and professionals.”
Each of the leadership programmes, which are mandatory and inclusive of all QP leaders, was customised to QP and co-designed in a partnership between QP’s Leadership Development Unit and top business schools.
Following the precedent set by QP’s High Performing Boards Programme in 2016, leaders from subsidiaries and key national organisations were invited to attend the Senior Leaders Programme. QP is planning more programmes and different types of leadership development for 2019 and 2020 to address emerging priorities and needs.
