The 10th Annual International Translation Conference, organised by the Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), affiliated to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), was launched yesterday at Qatar International Convention Center, with the participation of translators, experts and academics from more than 22 Arab and foreign countries.
The two-day conference will discuss new areas of translation studies and practices, including achievements in the fields of interpretation, audio-visual translation, creative translation and self-translation, as well as several other subjects. The Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hamad Bin Khalifa University and the President of the Conference Dr Amal al-Malki, said that the 10th edition of the conference is distinguished from the previous conferences by hosting a larger number of academics and researchers specialised in various fields of translation. This year, the organising committee chose the theme of “Translation Beyond the Margins” to highlight the role of translation and interpreter in the exchange of knowledge and the development of bridges of communication between peoples.
Al-Malki noted that despite the important role of interpreters in various fields, including economics and politics, they continue to occupy a marginal position in society, working in the shadows and out of sight and similarly, translation studies occupy a similar position in the humanities and social sciences.
