The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has allocated three government-owned land lots for the construction and operation of private schools, in implementation of the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, it was announced yesterday.
The initiative is also within the framework of the Ministerial Group for the Encouragement and Participation of the Private Sector in the Economic Development Projects of Qatar, chaired by HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.
The three land lots were awarded on a competitive basis after studying and evaluating bids submitted by investors developing private schools and following a series of interviews, according to a statement from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
The first is Cardiff School, an Indian curriculum-based school, to be located in Al Khor area. It will offer schooling for boys and girls in all levels. The school is expected to provide 1,134 seats for students.
The second school will be built by the developer Millennium Holding Company in Umm Al Qarn and will teach the American curriculum for boys and girls of all stages. The school is expected to provide 1,185 seats.
The third school, by the developer Hassanesco, will be based in Al Khor area and follow the American curriculum, for boys and girls of all stages, with 1,053 seats.
The private sector will be invited for submitting tenders for two more land lots to build two national curriculum-based schools.
Khalid Mohamed al-Hajri, director of Public Services Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and member of the technical group of the Ministerial Group for the Encouragement and Participation of the Private Sector in the Economic Development Projects of Qatar, said that the three schools, will provide over 3,200 seats to meet the increasing needs on education in the light of the population growth in Qatar.
In the first phase, six land lots were allocated to the private sector, with a capacity over 7,000 seats.
The technical committee has also received many requests from inside and outside Qatar to invest in the attractive private education sector. The committee is currently studying the launching of other projects.
