Eight children were killed in Sudan when the explosive device they mistook for scrap metal detonated, a relative said Sunday.
The children were playing Saturday in Omdurman, outside of the capital Khartoum, in an area that was formerly a military facility. Hamid Hussein, the brother of one of the deceased, told dpa the object was likely a hand grenade.
"The children always search for scrap metal to sell and I think they came across a hand grenade and thought it was iron," Hussein said. The children, aged between 10 and 13, were killed instantly.
"The strange object exploded while the children were playing with it," Hashim Abdel-Rahim, a Sudanese police spokesman, told the state news agency. Police have launched an investigation.
