Qatar-Oman trade volume witnessed a 240% jump from QR2bn in 2016 to QR6.8bn last year. In 2017, both countries’ trade exchange stood at QR3.8bn, private sector leader at the Qatar Chamber said in a statement.
Speaking at a meeting with a trade delegation from Oman, Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani said Oman was the top importer of non-oil products from Qatar.
Stressing the chamber’s keenness to enhance trade co-operation of both countries’ private sectors, Sheikh Khalifa said the number of Qatar-Oman joint companies in Qatar is more than 350, operating in the services, energy, and industry sectors, among others. Qatari investments in the Sultanate are mostly divided into shares, alliances, and partnerships in more than 200 Omani companies in various sectors, he continued.
Sheikh Khalifa also lauded the successful staging of the ‘Made in Qatar’ exhibition held in Muscat last December. He said this was the second time the expo was held outside the State of Qatar after five editions held regularly in Qatar.
He stressed the importance of hosting mutual exhibitions from the two sides, citing the Omani Products Exhibition (Opex) and the Oman Small & Medium Enterprises Exhibition hosted by Qatar in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to enhance bilateral co-operation in various economic and trade fields. Officials from both parties also expressed their desire to strengthen co-operation relations in all fields, and to exchange of experiences especially in the fields of exhibitions and conferences.
Mohsen bin Khamis al-Baloushi, adviser of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and chairman of the Amman Centre for Exhibitions and Conferences, said Qatar and Oman’s private sectors share “exceptional and developed relations.”
He noted that the visit aims to develop relations with the Qatari side and to exchange ideas and plans in terms of organising and promoting exhibitions and conferences, which, he said, would benefit both sides.
He said the trade delegation from Oman is seeking to explore opportunities for joint conferences and exhibitions with their Qatari counterparts. He also stressed the importance of holding exhibitions to expand the scope of business and partnerships to open wide horizons for joint cooperation and create business opportunities.
Qatar Chamber first vice chairman Mohamed bin Towar al-Kuwari also stressed the chamber’s keenness to encourage the Qatari private sector to invest in Oman, and to collaborate with the Omani counterparts. He also lauded the “great development” both parties achieved in the past two years.
Al-Kuwari said a delegation of more than 120 Qatari businessmen visited the Sultanate during the first months of the blockade, which played a “great role” in enhancing relations between companies in both countries. This also helped achieve “unprecedented success” and led to the signing of many important co-operation agreements and trade deals.
