Katara – the Cultural Village opened an art exhibition, ‘Spirits of Letters’, by Omani artist Dr Salman al-Hajri on Monday in Building 19. The exhibition focuses on the beauty of the calligraphy art in Arabic and how letters and words can be combined to form an expressive artwork.  “Arabic characters have the potential to express the movement and the mass and enrich the structural relationships in one artwork”, al-Hajri said. The artist presents about 30 works printed on canvas and strapped to a wooden frame. “The nature of the artworks in this exhibition is an attempt to present the Arabic letters as a basic theme expressed by the Arab Muslim artist on identity, thought and philosophy,” he noted. Describing his aim, al-Hajri said, “We are living in an era of knowledge that requires a language-based container, which is one of its tools.” “The philosophy of the exhibition is to promote the Arabic alphabets and its infinite ability to adapt,” he added. The exhibition will run until March 21 daily in Building 19.
