*Preparations for the 140th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union's (IPU) General Assembly complete

Preparations for the 140th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union's (IPU) General Assembly are complete, HE the Advisory Council Speaker Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud has said.

With Doha set to host the event from April 6 to 10, HE the Speaker on Wednesday said Qatar has made sure that all necessary arrangements for the success of the event have been put in place to guarantee a positive outcome of the joint parliamentary work. The upcoming IPU meeting in Doha is expected to further contribute to enhancing international co-operation to maintain world peace and prosperity in more effective ways.

He made these observations while addressing the ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions in Qatar at a meeting, organised to brief the diplomats on preparations for the upcoming event.

HE al-Mahmoud told the envoys that all necessary logistical preparations for the event have been completed, including sending invitations by express mail to the targeted participants. Besides, copies of such invitations will be sent to Qatari embassies as well as the missions of the participating countries in Doha.

The invited participants have been briefed on the topics involved and issues to be dealt with during the meeting, at various levels by different IPU committees and sub-committees. This year's theme is "Parliaments as platforms to enhance education for peace, security and the rule of law".

He told the attendants that Qatar has laid great emphasis on education and invested heavily in it out of its belief that education is a fundamental requirement for establishing the dominion of law and justice and its vital role in achieving stability and prosperity for the people.

Further, he said that the visiting delegations will have the opportunity to see firsthand the comprehensive progress achieved in the country across all fields under the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Similarly, they would be able to share their experiences and expertise in different areas with the Qatari side for the benefit of all parties.

He expressed the readiness of Qatar to extend the required assistance and help to make the event achieve its targets. HE al-Mahmoud also stressed that he looked forward to receiving the heads of parliaments and participating delegations in Doha to work together for the benefit of all parties and further enhance friendly relations with them.

He said the complicated conditions that many regions around the world face today require high-level international participation in this year's general assembly in order to reflect the role of parliaments in representing the hopes and aspirations of people.

Meanwhile, the Advisory Council has launched a website in co-operation with the IPU for easy-to-access registration in addition to providing the necessary information and links for the event.
