For the first time ever, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is organising an India Pavilion at the upcoming 16th edition of “Qatar Show” (previously known as the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition) to be held from February 20-25 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC). 
The Indian Pavilion, with 13 exhibitors, is to be featured as part of the Qatar-India Year of Culture 2019, the embassy explained in a statement yesterday. 
The exhibitors would showcase a complete range of products, including studded jewellery with precious stones like rubies, emeralds, sapphires and pearls; handmade jewellery specifically catering to the Arab tastes and preferences; and a wide range of contemporary, and modern jewellery, with detailed craftsmanship and intricate designs inspired by European and Middle Eastern trends over the last few decades. Indian ambassador P Kumaran welcomed the participation of GJEPC at the upcoming Qatar Show and said that “Indian gems and jewellery sector offers high quality and technical know-how to attract the attention of Qatari buyers who appreciate exquisite craftsmanship and intricate design patterns. 
“We know that Qatari families love to visit India for their jewellery shopping. The Qatar Show provides a unique opportunity to bring the latest trends in this sector to Doha and showcase their products in one of the most important markets in the region. We hope to see more participation by GJEPC delegation to Qatar in future.” 
Pramod Kumar Agrawal, chairman, GJEPC said: “We are looking forward to present India with a complete range of products which would also depict India’s unique capabilities and skills in the craftsmanship of intricate and exquisite jewellery. India’s gem & jewellery exports to Middle East accounted for $10.02bn in 2018. I am hopeful that this platform would open up new business opportunities and further strengthen the existing trade relationship with Middle East region.”
The 13 companies that are participating in the India Pavilion at Qatar Show include: LS Enterprises; Noor Jewels; Jagan Nath Hem Chand; Sital Dass Son; Iris Jewels; Amore jewels Pvt Ltd.; K K Jewels; Lotus Gem; Shrians Jewels; Divya Jewels; AKM Mehrasons Jewellers; De’viva jewels; Champalal and Co Jewellers.
The GJEPC, set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India in 1966, is the apex body of the gems and jewellery industry in India. Today, it represents over 6,000 exporters in the sector. With headquarters in Mumbai, the GJEPC has regional offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Surat and Jaipur, all of which are major centres for the industry. The gems and jewellery market size is about $75bn as of 2017 and is expected to reach $100bn by 2025. It contributes 29% to the global jewellery consumption.
India is one of the largest exporters of gems and jewellery and the industry is considered to play a vital role in the Indian economy as it contributes a major chunk to the total foreign reserves of the country. India exports 75% of the world’s polished diamonds, as per statistics from the GJEPC. 
The special Indian Pavilion is expected to attract participation by prominent Qatari businessmen, experts and connoisseurs in this field. 
The Indian Business and Professionals Council, which functions under the aegis of the Indian embassy, is also organising guided tours and B2B meeting for those visiting the Indian Pavilion.
