* Sheikha Moza, Prime Minister take part in celebrations 

* Thousands of citizens and residents participate in sporting activities

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Tuesday led the Qatar National Sport Day celebrations, which saw tens of thousands of residents participating in numerous activities held across the country.

His Highness the Amir visited Aspire Zone Foundation's Football Skills Development Center and participated in different kinds of sport activities held by members of Aspire Academy in the playground, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

His Highness Sheikh Tamim was also briefed on the facilities of the Center and on the state-of-the-art technology used to train and develop the skills of its members.

The Amir was accompanied by His Highness the Personal Representative Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, FIFA president Gianni Infantino and senior officials of the Qatar Football Association and Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF).

The biggest annual sport festival in Qatar saw thousands of people descend on AZF’s unique outdoor and indoor facilities to explore and enjoy the wide range of activities offered by the beating heart of sport in Qatar and the place where Qatar's Asian Cup players learnt to be champions.

Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) chairperson Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser attended QF's National Sport Day celebrations at Education City.

The activities were also attended by QF vice-chairperson and CEO Sheikha Hind bint Hamad al-Thani, Qatar Olympic Committee president HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, HE Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad al-Thani, United Nations Office for Partnerships executive director Robert Skinner, US Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Mohamed and US Olympic swimmer Conor Dwyer, as well as members of the wider community.

HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani participated in the activities organised by the Ministry of Interior at the Qatar Sports Club court.

In his capacity as Lekhwiya commander, HE Sheikh Abdullah also participated with the force's personnel in their National Sports Day celebration, which was held at the Lekhwiya arena and grounds in the presence of a large number of military and civilian members of the force.

HE the Prime Minister joined children with special needs in a wheelchair basketball game, and football game for mental disabilities.

Meanwhile, Qatar turned into a large sporting arena on Tuesday as citizens and residents stepped out in large numbers to celebrate the occasion.

The events saw the participation of ministries, various government organisations and agencies, sports clubs and private entities. In addition, there were activities for woman to instill the idea of community sports through expanding the base of popular participation in various sports activities, for all ages.

As in previous years, a wide range of events and activities were held to celebrate the country's sport day, including the various categories of Qatari society, men, women, children and people with special needs, to maintain a healthy and practical life.

This year's National Sport Day was particularly special as the national football team recently won the Asian Cup for the first time, further inspiring the people to engage in sporting activities and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Qatari missions around the world also organised special Sport Day events.
