“We have launched the annual traffic awareness plan for 2019 to implement the National Traffic Safety Strategy (NTSS),” said Colonel Mohamed Radi al-Hajiri, director of the Traffic Awareness Department.
He said that the Traffic Directorate has launched its annual traffic awareness plan for 2019 to implement the NTSS, including a variety of programmes, campaigns and training courses aiming to enhance road traffic safety and improve driving behaviour among the different categories of the society.
“The positive indicators achieved for the past year gives us even greater challenges, including further reducing the number of deaths from road traffic accidents, and reducing the number of both minor and major traffic accidents, whether these entail injuries or not.
“We have adopted new awareness approaches and ideas to reach out to the largest possible number of people in the country in addition to non-governmental organisations that support such awareness efforts,” he pointed out.
Major Jabir Mohamed Odibah, assistant director of the Traffic Awareness Department said there are training courses targeting traffic police to enhance their skills in enforcing the law, dealing with the public, and reporting.
The plan includes special training course for the traffic police on how to handle their duties during the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup. The training will be given by international specialists in the field. Such courses are preceded by a number of general foundation courses to prepare the targeted personnel and officers for the more specialised courses. Such training courses will go on as scheduled until 2022, putting traffic police into different categories according to the tasks that they are set to handle.
Captain Mohamed Sulaiman al-Hammadi, head of traffic awareness and culture said that the section has built active partnerships with various government and private entities including schools, auto dealers, driving schools, media organisations, and foreign communities to promote traffic awareness through lectures and training courses, and hence enhance traffic safety on the public roads.
First Lieutenant Abdulrahman Mohamed al-Awei, head of the traffic studies and information section, pointed out that the section regularly conducts comprehensive studies and researches to review the opinion of the people on the traffic situation in the country and study the related phenomena and issues. Collective transportation is one of the main issues studied by the section to ease traffic congestion during 2022 FIFA World Cup. In addition, the section issues periodic traffic reports to help decision makers improve the situation accordingly.
Major Jabir Mohamed Odibah revealed that a team from the Ministry of Interior has taken part in Qatar Charity Competitors Programme, alongside another team from the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs and raised a donation of QR2mn to build 64 housing units for the needy families in Kyrgyzstan, as part of the humanitarian message of MoI and community participation. The donations go to Qatar Charity, which undertakes the project.
