Young Qatari rider Abdulla al-Qubaisi broke the lap time record of the Qatar Superstock 600 Championship and clinched another double in the fourth round, even as Sheikh Jassim al-Thani secured the QSTK Trophy title with a double of his own at the Losail International Circuit Saturday.
In the first race, al-Qubaisi crossed the checkered flag in first place with an advantage of 8.846 over Mashel al-Naimi. Hungarian rider Balint Kovacs was back on the podium, with a third place.
In the second lap of first race, championship leader Saeed al-Sulaiti had a problem with the gear and he went off on to the gravel. He rejoined the race and finished in sixth place overall.
Al-Sulaiti had to settle for the second spot in the second race after al-Qubaisi kept the lead right till the end. Al-Naimi finished third.
“I am very happy with another double win. In the first race, I pushed from the beginning, with Mashel behind me, very close. The he overtook me but I managed to pass him after one lap. I tried to create a gap and I did,” al-Qubaisi said.
“In the second race, it was harder to create the gap as Saeed was there in the first laps. But I managed to take the lead until the end of the race and score important points for the standings. The final round will be very intense and I expect a thrilling battle with Saeed for the title.”
The results meant that al-Qubaisi, at 169, is only four points behind al-Sulaiti at 173.
Al-Sulaiti said, “I did my best to keep the championship lead, and I did it. I am still leading the championship but, unfortunately, by only four points. It is going to be a really tough last round between me and Abdulla.”
In the QSTK Trophy, Sheikh Jassim finished ahead of second-placed Mohamed al-Zaidan and third-placed Mohamed al-Eidi in both the races.
“Today I struggled a bit with the timing and the setting of the bike but I managed to take the lead and I pushed hard to finish in good place,” Sheikh Jassim said.
“I have already secured the championship, so my target for the last round will be to break my lap timing for this season. The next round will be a challenge for me to push harder and wrap up this season with a good timing.”
Trophies were presented by Losail Circuit Sports Club (LCSC) general manager and vice-president Khalid al-Remaihi, LCSC CEO Juan Baquero.
The fifth and final round will held be on March 29-30.
