Link TV, a national independent non-commercial satellite television network in the US, recently announced the expansion of its global news lineup with the addition of the Al Jazeera News Bulletin and Al Jazeera Newshour.
Link TV will offer both Al Jazeera English programmes to American viewers through Dish Network (Channel 9410) and DirecTV (Channel 375) as part of the basic packages, reaching a combined 35mn US households, according to a statement issued in Doha by Al Jazeera Media Network.
Airing from Monday through Thursday, starting February 11, the Al Jazeera News Bulletin will present viewers with 30 minutes of live, breaking and in-depth news from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. In addition, beginning February 15, Link TV will premiere one hour of Al Jazeera Newshour with in-depth reporting from the world, providing the latest news headlines and current events.
After each broadcast, viewers will have 14 days to stream the programmes at linktv.org/globalnews.
The two new Al Jazeera English newscasts join Link TV’s lineup of global news that includes Japan’s NHK Newsline, France 24 and DW News from German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle. The addition raises Link TV's profile as a destination where American audiences can find quality journalism and award-winning news programming that bridges cultures to give them a better understanding of the world, , the statement notes.
“We are delighted that Link TV has chosen to add Al Jazeera English content to its global news lineup,” said Giles Trendle, Al Jazeera English’s managing director. “This will provide American viewers with an opportunity to view our award-winning journalism and judge for themselves the quality, range and depth of our coverage of important global issues that affect us all. In a world seemingly beset by rising bigotry and extremism, Al Jazeera English has an important mission in providing a wider scope of information, insight and understanding. And we believe this syncs well with the mission of Link TV.”
“It is a critical time to re-establish a solid relationship with Al Jazeera as Link TV looks to bridge barriers utilising globally recognised and respected voices,” said Kim Spencer, co-founder of Link TV.
Three other Al Jazeera English series will also make their way to Link TV’s prime-time lineup later this year: 'Witness', 'Upfront' and 'Earthrise'.
The double header of 'Witness' and 'Upfront' will enhance Link TV’s Sunday night investigative and global analysis programming from March 3. 'Earthrise' will start on May 1.
