At least 16 students and a teacher have been injured after a school bus fell into a culvert in southern India on Monday, police said.
Two students sustained serious injuries in the crash involving the bus that was on its way to a private school in Andhra Pradesh state's Guntur district.
"The driver lost control of the bus resulting in the accident. Sixteen students between ages of seven and fifteen years were injured, two of them are critical," local police officer A
Venkateswarlu said.
Initial investigations showed the bus had developed some "mechanical problem," Ventakeswarlu added.
Television footage from the site showed school bags and lunch baskets strewn on the ground as locals gathered to help with rescue work.
Monday's incident was the second involving a school bus this month. Seven school children and the driver of their bus were killed earlier in January when their bus fell down a mountain gorge in north India.
