Secretary General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit met on Sunday with United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen.

Arab League spokesman Ambassador Mahmoud Afifi said that the meeting witnessed an extensive exchange of views on the latest developments in the Syrian crisis.

The Arab League Secretary-General reviewed the most important elements of the Arab League's position towards the crisis in light of the resolutions adopted since 2011 and the recent contacts in this regard among Member States, stressing the importance of reaching with the crisis to a peaceful solution that meets the aspirations of all the Syrian people, preserve Syria and its regional unity, and ensure that the humanitarian tragedy suffered by millions of Syrian people for nearly eight years is dealt with in an integrated manner.

For his part, the UN envoy presented the main results of his initial contacts with the parties concerned since he took office recently, stressing his keenness to establish permanent contacts in this framework with the Arab League to ensure recognition of the dimensions of the Arab situation and its developments.
