HE the Attorney-General Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri, the chairman of International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA), announced that Qatar will support a fund to assist those affected by the war on corruption with QR1mn. The fund will be named after Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in appreciation for his role in fighting corruption.
The attorney-general was speaking at the 10th IAACA conference, which kicked off in Vienna yesterday in the presence of Malaysian prime minister, parliamentarians, ministers of justice, heads of anti-corruption bodies and heads of academic institutions from different countries, in addition to representatives from United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The idea of the fund was launched by the Malaysian prime minister last December, during HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award. The idea included the establishment of a fund to support those affected by the war on corruption. Mahathir announced then a 500,000 Malaysian ringgit support for the fund.
The attorney-general said that the idea of the fund is progressive in addressing anti-corruption issues, adding that the fund would encourage those hesitant to get involved in the war on
corruption.
He said the fund will follow a transparent mechanism through IAACA, which are able to
monitor it closely.
He stressed that no one should be hesitant and must play a heroic role to serve their nations and the global community, and to save the humanitarian cause, in order to create sustainable development that offers children and future generations a
dignified life.
He underlined continued support for the IAACA and looked forward to creating a UN agency from it to fight corruption.
Attorney-General al-Marri said the IAACA was established to implement article four of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
He said that since its establishment, the IAACA provided the needed support to states, international and regional organisations and to all the international community organisations and will continue to provide this support till the future generations live in less corruption.
He added that corruption is a vice, and whoever does it must be held accountable, punished and will be on the lookout by the law.
Al-Marri said the path of fighting corruption is risky and those who fight corruption will not come out safe, but the attempts of the corrupt in intimidating those who fight corruption will strengthen their determination to continue this war.
The attorney-general said many of those who fought corruption paid a price either by dying, or losing a family member, or were displaced or by any
other way.
