The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the implementation of a temporary closure at Al Gharrafa Roundabout (known as Immigration R/A). The roundabout will be closed to northbound and southbound traffic, while the bridge will remain open, Ashghal has said in a statement. The closure, which starts Thursday and will last for a period of 14 days, is being implemented in co-ordination with the General Directorate of Traffic.
The closure will be carried out from midnight on Wednesday until 9am Thursday, from midnight on January 30 until 9am on January 31, and from midnight until 5am on the remaining days. During this period, northbound traffic will be diverted to Khalifa Street and drivers shall make a U-turn at the intersection with Arab League Street to return to Al Shamal Road or continue on Al Luqta Street. Southbound traffic will be diverted to Al Luqta Street and drivers can make a U-turn at the intersection with Huwar Street to return to Al Shamal Road or continue to Khalifa Street as shown on the map. East and westbound traffic will not be affected.
The diversion comes as part of Phase 1 of Ashghal’s project that aims to convert Immigration R/A into an intersection and develop parts of service roads on 22 February Road, in order to improve traffic movement and increase the intersection’s capacity. This phase also includes the development of the stormwater drainage system, protection of existing utilities, as well as the addition of new lighting poles at the new intersection, the statement notes. The authority will install road signs advising motorists of the closure, and has requested all road users to abide by the speed limit and follow the road signs to ensure their safety.
