The Souq Waqif Equestrian Festival 2019 began yesterday and for the next six days, organised by the Private Engineering Office.
A total of 142 horses took part in yesterday’s Arabian horses competition, which concludes today.
Ponies aged from two years to three and horses aged four years to six held their qualifiers yesterday.
Today will see the main event for a total of five different categories. Al Shaqab won yesterday in the category A of ponies aged two years.
Meanwhile ‘I’m Queen,’ owned by Abdullah Hamad Mohamed al-Hajri, won in category B of the same age group.
Al-Shaqab also controlled the contest in the three-year age group, winning all three top positions.
The organising committee has allocated big prizes this year.
First place in each category will get a gold medal and QR100,000, second place will get a silver medal and QR70,000 while the third place will get a bronze medal and a prize of QR40,000.
The committee also assigned international judges from Europe and the US, with a total of six judges for each of the two competitions.
The festival was scheduled to start on Thursday, but weather conditions forced a change to yesterday.
The horses auction was also rescheduled to Wednesday, with 83 in total participating.
The majority of the horses were Arabian, in addition to four horses from Umm Qarn, as well as many others from Souq Waqif.
