Ooredoo yesterday announced that it has deployed its 5G network in Sheehaniya, in line with its aim of allowing all its customers to enjoy the Supernet across the region and further afield.
The deployment of the 5G network means as soon as 5G-enabled devices are commercially available, customers in the area will be able to access the super-fast network speeds and superior efficiency and reliability offered by the futuristic technology.
The municipality of Sheehaniya is a vast expanse west of Qatar, predominantly desert, with Al Sheehaniya city the largest settlement and visitor attraction, including a nature reserve and a popular camel racing track.
This latest 5G development and the resulting super-fast Internet speeds proved useful yesterday when the Al Shahaniya Camel Race Track hosted French football team Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), which visited Doha as part of its annual winter tour.
Accompanied by senior executives from Ooredoo, the team was introduced to the traditional Qatari sport of camel racing, with players taking part in two races alongside Ooredoo Qatar chief executive officer Waleed
al-Sayed.
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel won the first race, while Brazilian superstar Neymar won the second race; each collected a cheque worth $25,000, which will be used for the development of Community and Social Responsibility Programmes of the Paris Saint-Germain Foundation.
Ooredoo was the first to launch a live, commercially available 5G network and has made incredible progress towards ensuring all elements will be ready to go as soon as the first devices are available.
A large number of network towers have already been installed across Doha, including in desert areas to provide 5G network access for campers, and intensive testing is showing that 5G offers super-fast speeds, extreme throughput, and low latency.
5G is the next step in network evolution, providing a superior experience to existing cellular systems. Ooredoo has already showcased some exciting possibilities that will be made available in the near future, such as driverless aerial taxis, smart roads, virtual and augmented reality, and never-before-seen gaming, as well as everyday requirements such as much
improved coverage.
