Several members of the Advisory Council have called for a review of the penalties imposed on violators of the traffic law, as well as the rules for obtaining a driver's licence. The members raised these points during a general discussion at Monday's regular weekly meeting of the Advisory Council, chaired by HE the Speaker of the Council Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud, on traffic accidents.
The members discussed the causes of traffic accidents and how to reduce them, especially in the Sealine area, taking into account the efforts exerted by the concerned authorities, primarily the Ministry of Interior, to reduce these incidents.
During the discussion, the members emphasised that, besides the law, special consideration should be given to the cultural aspect, and to raise the awareness of young people about the risks of non-compliance with the law and exceeding the specified speed limits. They also called for legalising certain "practices" to control and correct them.
The members also stressed the important role of the media in reducing traffic accidents and highlighting their dangers, as well as the role of the family, society, and schools in educating youngsters to respect the traffic rules and laws, and to abide by proper conduct while driving.
After extensive discussion, the Council decided to refer the matter to the Committee on Internal and External Affairs for an in-depth study with respect to all aspects and a report to the Council.
Draft law on maritime zones approved
The Advisory Council, chaired by HE the Speaker of the Council Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud, on Monday approved the draft law on Qatar's maritime zones. The Council discussed the report of the Internal and External Affairs Committee on the country's maritime zones. After discussion, the Council approved the draft law and decided to refer it to the government.
