Addressing an educational awareness lecture, organised by the Information Security Centre at the Ministry of Interior on the lessons learned from the latest threats and cyber attacks on state agencies, al-Khulaifi highlighted the importance of the role played by the centre in facing the phenomenon in co-operation with related entities.
Al-Khulaifi said the ministry is working to secure various official entities from cyber attacks. He also highlighted the importance of the people working under this framework.
He said, considering the large number of hacking attempts in Qatar or other countries it is evident that these attacks occur daily and that they are carried out by nations or individuals. Such attacks pose a high risk for Qatar if it is not protected well, he added.
Besides HE al-Khulafi the lecture was attended by Major Mahmoud Salah Ibrahim of the Electronic Security Unit, several officers from the Interior Ministry and representatives from different entities of the state.
Assistant head of Information Security Centr Major Osman Salem al-Hamoud said Qatar knows the significance of cybersecurity and the danger of not committing to it.
Hence, the centre is taking several initiatives and implementing projects and activities aimed at strengthening the electronic security in the country in general, and not just in the Ministry of Interior, al-Hamoud added.
He said many state entities are connected electronically through the central operations room to ensure their security.
Last year, 20 entities were connected with the aim of safeguarding their transactions and addressing the hacking attempts they faced. Work is underway to double the number, linking vital entities, in co-operation with all institutions and bodies in the state, he said.
Al-Hamoud said there are many other services provided by the centre, including the examination and identification of gaps in security. The centre works proactively and examines the relevant entities in the operations room, and monitors the gaps exposed by them, and co-operates with the entities to close them.
Infrastructure head at Information Security Centre, First Lieutenant Abdul Aziz Hamid al-Marwani said there are a large number of official bodies present today with the aim of spreading electronic awareness and warning of attacks on their accounts.
Head of operations room at Information Security Centre, Jaber Abdullah al-Mannai, said the lecture discussed some of the models of cyber attacks, which the centre dealt with last year, and the lessons learnt from them.
The lecture also heard recommendations by the centre to the participants to protect their information and accounts from hacking and piracy.
