Qatar has achieved considerable increase in the number of domestic animals and animal products throughout 2018 with the commissioning of 37 new projects, a senior official has said.
Farhoud Hadi al-Hajiri, director of Animal Wealth Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), told local Arabic daily Arrayah that this is part of the country’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in meat and dairy products to maintain food security.
The new projects include dairy production, production and processing of meat and poultry products, and raising various types of cattle.
Al-Hajiri said many of these projects have already started production and their products are available in the local markets which have reflected positively on the overall status of self-sufficiency in this area.
He said the MME is closely working with its local partners from the private sector in its plan to attain self-sufficiency, according to the national strategy for supporting local production and reducing dependency on imports.

There has been around 20% increase of animal wealth in the country during 2018, as the number of cattle in Qatar has gone up to around 1.6mn heads owned by 17 farms, according to the latest statistics, al-Hajiri said.
Similarly, almost 100% self-sufficiency has been achieved in local production of milk during 2018 compared to 28% before June 2017, when an unjust blockade by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt was imposed on Qatar.
The official stressed Qatar would soon see a surplus of milk production which would be exported. The country has also reached around 98% self -sufficiency in chilled chicken products while the earlier figure stood at only 50%.
With the announcement of the new projects, local production is expected to cover 100% of the domestic needs. As for table eggs, the current local production cover around 28% of the local needs, compared to only 14% before the unjust blockade.
