As many as 36,193 companies and establishments have registered under the Wage Protection System (WPS) in the country, a source at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (MADLSA) told local Arabic daily Arrayah.
The number of workers who got their salaries through bank transfers amounted to 1,277,029, according to a report published Monday. The source pointed out that WPS is regularly updated by MADLSA with the information supplied by the participating entities after confirming the authenticity and transparency. 
The source explained that MADLSA Inspection Department conducted 52,560 inspection visits last year, comprising 28,226 work inspections targeting 20,851 facilities and 24,334 visits to check on safety and occupational health at 7,210 facilities. During the same period, 13,159 field surveys were conducted. 
The source stressed that the department has intensified its efforts of inspection on labour accommodations with 4,561 visits to ensure all the necessary standards and conditions are met as per the local laws to guarantee good living conditions for the workers.
Accordingly, 20 awareness campaigns were carried out targeting 17 different facilities. Similarly, the first stage of removing the workers accommodations at the farms was carried out by giving the companies concerned 90 days notice. There were 389 violating accommodations. 
It was also found that 292 companies had improper workers' accommodations and 285 of these were already notified to evacuate the unsuitable premises, Arrayah added.
