Two senior officials from Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and the United Nations (UN) have agreed to work together to alleviate the suffering of war-affected and neediest populations, particularly in Yemen, Somalia, Syria, and Palestine.
QRCS secretary-general Ali bin Hassan al-Hammadi met with UN’s undersecretary for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief co-ordinator Sir Mark Andrew Lowcock during the 18th Doha Forum, discussing mutual humanitarian co-operation in war zones.
QRCS’ Relief and International Development Division general director Noura Rashid al-Dosari was also involved in the discussion.
Al-Hammadi welcomed the senior guest and gave him an overview of QRCS’ active role as part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, through a network of representation offices in multiple countries across Asia and Africa.
He highlighted the importance attached by the State of Qatar to relief and development programmes, which are QRCS's major mandates.
In Yemen, al-Dosari said QRCS offers diverse services and aid in water and sanitation, shelter, and health care.
Notably, the organisation provides vaccination for children against cholera and other epidemic that have weighed heavily on the Yemeni people for the past few years.
“On the occasion of Qatar's National Day 2018, we have deployed four medical convoys to extend medical help for poor patients in Bangladesh, Jordan, Somalia, and Sudan,” al-Hammadi said.
Sir Lowcock expressed his appreciation for QRCS’ humanitarian contributions, emphasising his special interest in the Yemeni conflict, under the agreement between His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres towards intensified efforts to put an end to the sufferings in Yemen. He also put Palestine as a top priority for him.
QRCS pays great attention to humanitarian diplomacy and advocacy, by working towards what was described as a “humanitarianised” legislation: issuing emergency appeals and launching fundraising campaigns to mobilise support for the vulnerable; raising awareness about disasters and crises to urge the international community to intervene; and help the nations hit by natural disasters or wars and armed conflicts.
QRCS is also promoting the international humanitarian law, the four Geneva Conventions, the seven fundamental humanitarian principles, and human rights to further establish international peace and security.
Other undertakings in this field include building the capacity of fellow national societies and charitable organisations and upgrading their human, technical, and administrative resources; strengthening professional, institutional, and personal relations with all components and officials of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement; and representing Qatar in regional and international social and humanitarian events.
