Former Nepalese prime minister Tulsi Giri died in Kathmandu on Tuesday at age 93, his wife said in a statement.
His wife, Sarah Giri, said that he had been diagnosed with liver cancer a few years ago.
A doctor by training, he started his political career with the Nepali Congress party.
Giri became chairman of the Council of Ministers, a de facto prime ministerial position, for the first time in 1963 and was appointed again in 1964 and 1965.
He served as prime minister from 1975 1977.
Giri moved to Sri Lanka in 1979 but returned to Kathmandu in 2003 after King Gyanendra Shah, who became the monarch after the Royal Massacre in 2001, named him vice-chairman of the Council of Ministers.
Giri had been leading a life away from the limelight after the royal government was toppled by a people's movement in 2006.
