The Austrian ambassador to Qatar, Willy Kempel, has stated that Qatar’s celebration of its National Day reflects the past when the Qatari people came together in 1878 for a journey towards togetherness and national strength.
The ambassador wished Qatar and its people well in their aspirations to achieve further progress in their national development and international
engagements.
He pointed out that National Day celebrations constitute an important tool for fostering national identity and reflecting on origins of the past and challenges of the present and of the future.
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), he spoke about Qatar’s multifaceted role on fields such as education, health and human rights as well as abroad in supporting peacebuilding, human rights mechanisms, reconciliation and humanitarian assistance. “It seems beyond doubt that Qatar will continue its constructive engagement for bettering the life of many people living under distress.”
He praised Qatar’s recent reforms in the rule of law, labour and trade law and human rights. “Qatar has used the last year and half to become more resilient as well reform its labour law and commercial law. Apart from modernising legislation, these reforms meant implementing international human rights standards fully recognised by the International Labour Organisation.”
He also said that Qatar, in 2017, took decisive measure to strengthen the rule of law and fight corruption by acceding to both to the Civil and Political Rights Covenant as well as the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Covenant and the International Anti-Corruption Academy located in Austria; furthermore, Qatar was re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2017-2019.
