Plans are afoot to expand Qatar's shipping network to include all continents of the world as part of efforts to enlarge the geographical footprint.
This was disclosed by Mwani Qatar in a statement after it took part as the title sponsor in the Lloyd’s List Global Awards 2018 ceremony, which was recently held in London.
The Hamad Port, which recently celebrated the handling of over 2mn containers and 5mn tonnes of cargo, now connects more than 40 ports in three continents with over 24 shipping services, according to Mwani Qatar.
"Hamad Port was able to build a global shipping network in a short period thanks to the strong confidence it gained in the world's shipping and logistics community," Mwani Qatar said.
The port's high capabilities and innovative technology, especially in the fields of clearance and inspection, have played a major role in facilitating operations and increasing port productivity, it said, adding this has contributed to the acceleration of handling operations, thereby raising the port’s competitiveness in terms of the time consumed in stevedoring services.
The Lloyd’s List Global Awards was organised annually to showcase and reward the best talent and achievements in shipping over the last year. The awards are a vibrant celebration of the key players in global shipping and are recognised worldwide as a significant mark of success.
The Lloyd’s List Global Awards classification is based on the Hamad Port’s high levels of efficiency and the overall performance achieved in a record period, in addition to its important role in promoting innovative and environment-friendly technology in the ports sector by adopting initiatives that contribute to delivering sustainable smart infrastructure solutions.
The classification underlines the Hamad Port’s efforts to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 in accordance with the Ministry of Transport and Communications’ strategic plan, which is implemented by Mwani Qatar, aiming at transforming Qatar into a regional trade and logistics hub. It also reflects the advanced status achieved by the port within two years of the start of full operations.
The port’s 2mn tonnes cargo achievement came in record time with operations starting only as recently as October 2016. The new routes include additional services from China, the Far East and Bangladesh, as well as enhancement of services from established routes including India, Pakistan, Oman, and the Mediterranean.
As part of its strategic vision, Mwani Qatar is working to achieve a set of goals that are in line with the QNV 2030. The main objective is to transform Qatar into a vibrant regional hub by making Qatari ports the preferred choice for port users with an emphasis on innovation and ensuring global operating efficiencies.
