A large crowd of nursing students, staff, faculty, alumni, families and friends gathered on the grounds of University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) to celebrate Qatar National Day.
UCQ dean Dr Deborah White welcomed the audience, expressing her gratitude to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani for the honour of serving the country through the delivery of nursing education to the people of Qatar.
Dr Sheikh Khalid bin Jabor al-Thani, chairman, Qatar Cancer Society and chairman of the board of trustees at UCQ, was this year’s special guest speaker. “Qatar National Day is an exciting opportunity for all residents to celebrate our country’s history and traditional culture. An important part of any strong society is its healthcare system. UCQ is contributing to Qatar by producing well-educated nurses who are leaders in their workplaces. I am delighted to be here today to help UCQ celebrate this important day.”

A cultural performance in progress

The National Day celebrations at UCQ showcased Qatari culture through traditional food, activities and a special traditional folk performance by local artistes.
“UCQ is very proud to host this annual event and welcome so many friends and partners to campus,” said Dr White. “Our Qatar National Day celebration is one of the most important dates on our university calendar. It’s a time for our entire UCQ community to celebrate Qatar’s unique traditions and culture.”
UCQ looks forward to hosting further cultural events in the future, the university has said in a statement.
