More than 700 healthcare professionals gathered in Doha for the Third Qatar Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Conference (QDEM-3) over the weekend.
The conference brought together local and international experts in the fields of endocrinology, obesity, osteoporosis, women's health, and diabetes.
Hosted by Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) Endocrine and Diabetes Division, Department of Medicine, and the Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI), the conference examined strategies and approaches for the prevention of diabetes and its management.
Frontline clinicians, along with scientists working in healthcare, research, and academia, both in Qatar and abroad, attended the event, which was held from 29 November to 1 December.

The prevalence of diabetes among the Qatari adult population is estimated to be around 17%, which is double the world average.
Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at HMC, and QMI Director, Professor Abdul-Badi Abou-Samra, said the event highlighted the work being done in Qatar in the fields of endocrinology and diabetes treatment and management.
"Every month HMC and the Primary Health Care Corporation provide care to over 30,000 patients with diabetes, with approximately 3,000 of them receiving specialised care at HMC facilities.
Many of these people live with other associated complications such as high blood pressure, kidney disease, and vision impairment.
"It is important for the local and international medical community to meet and discuss trends, best practices, and long-term strategies for the prevention and mitigation of complications related to this disease so we can continue to provide the best care for our patients," said Professor Abou-Samra.
Senior Consultant and Head of HMC's Endocrinology and Diabetes Division and Chair of the Conference's Organising Committee Dr Mahmoud Ali Zirie said the event included sessions dedicated to calcium and metabolic bone disorders, metabolic surgery, diabetes, and thyroid conditions, and included presentations from some of the world's leading experts in these fields.
"This conference is one of the most significant gatherings of endocrinology clinicians and professionals in the region this year. It is an opportunity for healthcare professionals to share their own experiences and learn from international best practices. It is also a platform to showcase Qatar's progress and work towards both treating and preventing these conditions," said Dr Zirie.
Last month the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), in collaboration with HMC, the Primary Health Care Corp (PHCC), and Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), launched an awareness campaign on diabetes prevention.
The four-phase campaign will last almost two years with the aim of raising awareness among both Qataris and residents about diabetes prevention and accessing required healthcare services.
The campaign is part of the implementation of the National Diabetes Strategy 2016-2022 under the slogan "Preventing Diabetes Together".
