There has been a remarkable improvement in the traffic situation in Qatar since the establishment of the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) five years ago, Secretary-General Brigadier Mohamed Abdullah al-Malki said yesterday.
“The number of deaths in road traffic accidents came down last year by nearly 25% compared to 2013,” he told the concluding session of the International Traffic Safety Conference, conducted jointly by the Qatar University and the General Directorate of Traffic under the Ministry of Interior.
The NTSC was set up in 2013, recalled the official while pointing out that Qatar received an international honour recently for the improvement in traffic safety.
While announcing the recommendations of the conference, Brigadier al-Malki said Qatar is committed to continue the good works being initiated by the NTSC for strengthening traffic safety.
“We are working round-the-clock to ensure that the deaths in road traffic accidents in country would go down by at least 50% in 2022 when the country hosts the FIFA World Cup,” he said.
Qatar would enhance its co-operation with the UN forums as part of its commitment to improve traffic safety. The role of intelligent transport systems is to be strengthened. Qatar would also partner with international bodies for ensuring better traffic safety for its residents, the official said.
Along with finding solutions to traffic congestion, consistent efforts would also be made to reducing irregularities or misconduct of road users.
The official also highlighted the necessity of establishing a proper database for traffic and road traffic accidents in line with the best international practices so that it is available for the country’s residents at regular intervals.
