HE the Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim Seif Ahmed al-Sulaiti said the ministry began implementing its five-year traffic safety plan, covering many aspects to curb accidents and deaths and injuries.
Speaking at the opening session at the International Traffic Safety Conference Monday, he explained the plan focuses on decreasing deaths by 50% to finally achieve the zero accidents vision.
There is also emphasis on building highly efficient road networks including second generation intelligent strategy for transport which reduces traffic congestion and accidents and meets the development requirements of the State and the society.
HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani was present at the opening session of the conference organised jointly by the Ministry of the Interior and Qatar University (QU).

While complimenting the achievements of Qatar, al-Sulaiti said it is a matter of utmost satisfaction that the National Traffic Safety Committee has achieved results much beyond its earlier expectations.
"Qatar has taken some remarkable steps in the infrastructure development and a number of world class expressways have already been completed and more are under construction. The work of the Doha Metro is in a very advanced stage," he said while informing that construction of all stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup is in full swing. An ambitious plan is also underway to link land, air and sea transport.
Acknowledging the role being played by the National Traffic Safety Office in the last five years since its establishment, al-Sulaiti said it has helped to develop a clear traffic safety strategy at the national level besides covering such areas as sustainable development, national economy and security.
The minister said while extending its support to the traffic safety campaigns being initiated by the UN at the global level Qatar's Ministry of Transport and Communications has been working round the clock to developing a well organised transport system in the country.
"Our National Traffic Safety Office is working together with the UN's Ambassador of Traffic Safety to develop and launch meticulous plans as part of our National Traffic Safety Strategy."
Al-Sulaiti also highlighted the launch of the Qatar Road Design Guide, Qatar Traffic Control Guide and the comprehensive plan for pedestrian crossings.
QU president Dr Hassan Rashid al-Derham said the conference is part of the framework of the State's interest in developing transport and enhancing traffic safety, under the direct supervision of HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister.
"QU, represented by the Qatar Transportation and Traffic Safety Centre, is one of the stake holders in the implementation of the decade-long National Traffic Safety Strategy (2013-2022) and is responsible for the implementation of 13 action plans at the state level," he added.
