The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) is currently studying three environmental programmes and projects to protect wildlife in the open desert area across Qatar.
A source at the MME told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the protection of Qatari environment and preserving its resources is among the most important priorities, according to the 2018-2022 strategic sustainable plan.
The three projects are: Completion of a project launched in 2014 to restore and expand the wild deserts of the country, launch of a number of campaigns to green the desert areas and reintroduce endangered wild plants, and reviewing the environmental control laws and regulations and issuing a new draft law for the protection of the local environment.
The project of developing the wild areas include fencing them and banning entry of vehicles to protect the plant life, in addition to adding more wild trees and plants. Some of these areas would be converted into natural preserves and protectorates such as Rawdat Al Maydah, proposed to be made a natural protectorate. Accordingly, a fence will be installed around the place and vehicles banned while allowing visitors to explore on foot only, in accordance with the environmental standards.
