Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has launched ‘Our strength in our health’ campaign to raise awareness about the most common cancers among men, especially prostate and lung cancer, to mark November — which is men’s health awareness month.
Dr Hadi Mohamad Abu Rasheed, head of the Professional Development and Scientific Research Department at QCS, said, “‘Our strength in our health’ aims to raise awareness about the risks that affect men’s health especially cancer. We are also raising awareness about early detection, the causes that increase the chances of infection, methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment through many awareness lectures and workshops targeting different sectors in the country.”
He explained that the word ‘Movember’ is used to express November, Men’s Health Awareness month, and the first letter of the word moustache in English. The campaign focus on prostate and lung cancers that are the most common types among men.
Abu Rasheed recommended that men have to discuss with their doctor whether to be screened for prostate cancer by the age of  50 years without any  family history of prostate cancer  and  for men who have more than one first-degree relative who had prostate cancer at an early age as well as at any age if there is warning symptoms of prostate cancer.
The doctors will use the test results, together with the age, medical history of warning symptoms of prostate cancer, and family history of prostate cancer, to estimate the risk of prostate cancer. If the risk is high, the patient may need a biopsy of prostate tissue as the test is done to confirm.
He stressed the importance of early detection of lung cancer by asking one’s doctor about the suitable and available screening tests if a person is 55 years old and above.
He explained that people can reduce the  risk of developing lung cancer by stopping smoking and avoiding secondhand smoking and  passive smoking. Some chemicals that contribute to lung cancer are found in homes such as  cleaning chemicals products and the  wood smoke from wood burning stoves.
He also advised everyone to be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day for 4-5 days a week, eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes, reduce the use of red meat and avoid processed food.
