The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced the one-week closure of the food section at a hypermarket located in Al Hilal for displaying and selling expired chocolate biscuits. The closure decision comes within the framework of its intensive inspection campaigns to monitor markets and commercial activities in order to crack down on price manipulation and violations, as well as counterfeit and substandard products, the ministry has said in a statement.
The food section at the hypermarket was closed for a week for violating Article 6 of Law No 8 of 2008. Article 6 prohibits the sale, display, advertising and promotion of substandard, counterfeit and fraudulent products. A product is considered fraudulent if it fails to meet the standards, is unusable or has expired, the statement explains. An administrative closure decision is to be published at the expense of the shop that commits the violation in accordance with Article 18 of Law No 8 on Consumer Protection. The law stipulates that the closure decision shall be published on the ministry’s website and in two daily newspapers at the expense of the violating company.
The ministry has stressed that it will not tolerate any violations of the Consumer Protection Law and its regulations. It will intensify inspection campaigns and refer those who violate laws and ministerial decrees to the competent authorities, who will, in turn, take appropriate action against the perpetrators in order to protect consumer rights.
