The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies will hold a seminar entitled “From Arms to Peace: Transformations from Armed Political Action to Peaceful Political Action” on November 3 and 4.
The seminar examines situations of transition from armed political activity to unarmed political activity through various models of the world.
The seminar will discuss 26 cases of transformation from armed organisations to political parties or peaceful social movements, which are being addressed by academics, scholars, politicians and leaders of these transformations.
The cases represent the four continents Asia (Middle East), Africa (Northern and Southern Desert), Europe (South and West), Central and South America and the Caribbean.
The seminar also hosts a group of leaders from the transition from arms to peace to present their testimonies on the trajectories, causes and constraints of these transformations.
This seminar is the first of its kind in the Arab region in terms of research content and political and academic expertise invited, and will include among its outputs the first Arab book dealing with the subject of shifting from weapons to peace in a systematic scientific way.
The various sessions present important intellectual and political questions in the Arab world today, after the 2011 uprisings, the most important of which are: How do transformations of arms develop into peace; Why do they occur; What are the conditions for starting the transition towards nonviolence; What are the conditions for the continuity of peaceful political activity among many.
