Omega FC defeated Thodi Desi (TD) FC 2-0 in the final to lift the Rising Cup football tournament, organised by Keralite Engineers Forum (KEF), at Al Jazeera football grounds on Friday.
As many as 16 local teams participated in the tournament, which was played over the last two weekends and has attracted substantial interest from several football teams in Qatar.
After playing a goalless first half, both the finalists seemed determined in the second, but Omega’s ability to maintain their speed and stamina meant translated into a goal each by Abdul Rahman and Roshan.
Nirmal of Omega was selected as the Best Player, while Mohamed Sajid was adjudged the best goalkeeper. Azad of TD FC was the top-scorer of the tournament with four goals.
Omega had beaten Rising Reds (2-0) in their semi-final match for their spot in the tournament decider. TD FC had edged out Friday FC 2-1 in the other semi-final.
KEF chairman Sajeet George along with Mathew Francis, Mibu Jose, Kishore Nair, Prakash Nair, Shabeer Ahmed and Jiji Arvind kick-started the finals on Friday.
KEF Rising Cup 2018 organising committee was headed by Sudheesh Gopalakrishnan, Mohamed Farhad MV and Dayan Antony. Al Khaleej Modern Lights was the main sponsor of the tournament, while Castle Group and Global Auto Parts were the support sponsors. Naseem Al Rabeeh Medical Centre provided the first aid support for the games and Mai Doha provided the drinking water to players and spectators.
