The Primary Health Care Co-operation (PHCC) has marked the International Obesity Day by organising several health and awareness-raising events in a number of schools for different age groups and in various areas in the country, aiming at raising health awareness among members of the community and students in particular.
Dr Leila Dahnim, Consultant of Community Medicine and Director of School Health Programme and Services, stressed the need to fight obesity as one of the most prevalent health problems among children and adolescents, and as one of the main causes of diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension.
She advised students and their guardians to stay away from routine lifestyle, practice sports, eat healthy meals rich in vegetables and fruits, and reduce the consumptions of fast food.
The activities organised to mark this global health event, which falls on October 21 each year, targeted 16 school with various awareness, educational and sports activities.
