Hundreds of members of the White Helmets - a volunteer Syrian search and rescue organization - who were evacuated to Jordan are now on their way to be resettled in western countries, Jordan's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
In July, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that his country had agreed to temporarily host the rescuers after Britain, Germany and Canada pledged to resettle them within three months.
They had entered Jordan from the Israel-occupied Golan Heights after they were evacuated from southern Syria amid a Syrian government offensive against rebels in the area.
A Jordanian Foreign Ministry statement said on Wednesday that 279 of the rescue workers had left Jordan for the western countries. The total number of rescue workers and their family members was 422 and the rest will travel within two weeks, it added.
Founded in 2013 to assist Syria's opposition-controlled areas lacking emergency services, White Helmets have helped rescue survivors from bombed-out buildings; they also fight fires and offer first aid.
